New Mexico's water damage risk is driven largely by its summer monsoon season, when intense, localized thunderstorms can produce flash flooding through the state's many arroyos and low lying areas, often with little advance warning. The risk is compounded in areas affected by past wildfires, since burned landscapes shed rainfall rather than absorbing it, increasing flash flood risk in and below burn scars for years afterward. The Rio Grande corridor, running through Albuquerque and other population centers, adds additional flood risk during periods of heavy rain or rapid snowmelt.
